THE RAF GLIDING AND SOARING ASSOCIATION - ITS ORIGINS AND THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS

Mereo Books release a comprehensive new book compiled and written by Air Marshal Sir Ian Macfadyen KCVO CB OBE

Interest in gliding is almost as old as the RAF itself, but the sport’s golden years arrived after the 1939-45 war, in which gliders had played such a crucial role in the D-Day landings. After the hostilities were over a growing number of impromptu RAF gliding clubs appeared, and in 1949 a small group of enthusiasts decided to form an association to foster their enthusiasm. Hence the birth of the RAFGSA, ‘in a taxi on the way to a Chinese restaurant’, as the inscription of the Founders’ Trophy has it. Here for the first time is the Association’s full story - Air Marshal Sir Ian Macfadyen KCVO CB OBE
